International Refugee Family Fundraiser
October 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Join Centering Youth teachers Sumayya Allen and Amelia Reiser for an evening of yoga practice, story sharing, and community building to support Centering Youth’s ongoing yoga classes with refugees at the International Rescue Committee. Decatur Yoga North considers itself a neighbor of the IRC, located in Clarkston and Tucker, and supports this program through the work of many of DY teachers who are also teachers for CY!
Before and after our yoga class, enjoy a photography exhibit by Bud Newton, which chronicles his personal experience in the refugee camps near Behramkale, Turkey back in October 2015 – and sip on chai tea, kindly donated by our downtown neighbors, Chai Pani!
Centering youth is a 501c3 nonprofit bringing trauma informed yoga and mindfulness to underserved populations of the greater Atlanta area. Scientific studies show yoga and mindfulness training provide young people and adults with tools for gaining self-confidence, focusing their attention, and controlling their emotions and conduct, in addition to many other benefits of engaging in a positive physical and mental activity. Centering Youth works to help participants function in their family units, in schools, and in their communities, so they can succeed in reaching their positive goals, avoid future contact with the criminal justice system and advance the cause of community safety and personal thriving.
